We will not know our own injustice if we cannot imagine justice. We will not be free if we do not imagine freedom… Dislodge the mind from the lazy, timorous habit of thinking that the way we live now is the only way people can live.
— Ursula K. Le Guin

Statues and Attitudes is a three day exhibition and series of free public workshops and events; an imaginary educational institute and retreat center; a portal and a liminal space. Examining 1970s feminist speculative science fiction and themes such as environmentalism, aging, consumerism, and time travel, Statues and Attitudes investigates the trope of the futuristic female-only utopia as an exploration of female agency and liberation from patriarchy. Society faces a sudden catastrophic event. At this moment even the hope of human survival seems like a utopian desire. We seek to create a ritualized, aesthetic space within which we will consider strategies for collective healing, self-critique, and social change. Metaxis is a Greek word that means an in-betweenness, a way to exist in two different worlds at once. We visit astrologers and crystal healers. We have a sense of humor and a sense of responsibility. We find ways to protect and love each other. Statues and Attitudes gathers a chorus of women’s voices, past and present, that sings of things to come beyond the terrifying immediate future and of old possibilities that were never allowed to exist. We can make things happen.

We invite you. You are not a consumer but a participant. We want to uncover our connections and reveal our communities. What are you are thinking? How are you feeling? There is no outside where you can simply stand and watch. We travel through time. We are laughing and crying. We are listening and reaching out. Anyone willing to participate is invited. Climb the ladder and throw it away. The body is engaged with our process of thinking. Thinking takes place simultaneously in the brain, the body, and the world around us. The universe is participatory. The universe is relational. The space from here to there is fixed. Those are the riverbanks. But the space between is unforeseeable. The river you enter is always new.
